There aren’t too many things that are more exciting than playing in a live backgammon tournament. Well, at least for the hardcore backgammon enthusiasts. If you have not played in one yet, I suggest that you find one in your area and prepare yourself for the time of your life. Before you up and join a tournament though, here are some things that you should know so that you can enjoy your experience to the fullest.
Communicate with the tournament director
This is always important, so that you know what exactly you are getting into. This is even more important if it is your first time to join the tournament and you are not familiar with their practices. You should know what the divisions are, their descriptions, and the events that they will be holding. Obviously, this should be done way ahead of time so that you can prepare yourself.
Get your own gear
While some tournaments just might have boards handy, the usual practice is for players to bring their own boards. If you do not have one, either buy one or borrow one. Also make sure that you get quality dice and cups.
That is, learn how to play from both sides of the board. While you might prefer to play from a particular direction, you should never get comfortable only from that aspect. The chances are that you would have to play in either direction in a tournament and you have to be good at both sides.
